If you've used any AI help drafting your Personal Insight Questions (PIQs), it's a fair question — and one that doesn't have a single clean public answer, because individual admissions offices don't publish their internal review processes.

The UC system has not published a policy stating that every application is automatically run through a specific AI detector as part of admissions decisions. At the same time, AI-detection tools are widely available, and some admissions readers may use them informally, so treating your essays as if they could be checked is the safer assumption.
What UC application guidance does consistently emphasize is that PIQs should reflect the applicant's own voice and experience — that's the actual standard being evaluated, independent of any specific detection tool.
AI detectors are known to produce false positives more often on short, structured writing — which describes a PIQ almost exactly (350-word limit, tightly structured prompt). They also flag non-native English writing styles at a higher rate, which is a well-documented fairness concern with these tools generally.
That means even a fully original PIQ, written without any AI assistance, can occasionally score as 'likely AI-generated' simply because of its length and structure. This cuts both ways: it's a reason not to panic over a single detector result, and also a reason to double-check your own writing before submitting, since you can't control how a reader might interpret a stray flag.
Write your own draft first, in your own words and from your own specific experiences — specificity is both what admissions readers are actually looking for and what's hardest for AI detectors to flag, because generic AI-style phrasing is exactly the pattern these tools are built to catch.
